If you mention the Cayman Islands to most Americans they will smile knowingly and regale you with tales of perfect beaches and world class diving. They may not have been to the Cayman Islands in person but they will happily tell you stories of someone who has.
That is hardly surprising when you consider that the Cayman Islands attract two million visitors each year with the vast majority made up from our transatlantic cousins. This could be due to the large number of direct flights from Miami to Grand Cayman every week or it could be because the Cayman Islands enjoy the highest standard of living of any of the Caribbean islands.
Whatever the reason, the Cayman Islands remains as one of the worlds ultra-elite destinations and one that, until recently, was a relative stranger to all but the well informed European traveller.
But, as Bob Dylon wrote, The times, they are a-changing due in part to a concerted effort from the Cayman Island Tourist Board (CITB) and a big shift in public opinion about acceptable holiday destinations. Gone are the days when a two week holiday would mean packing a bucket and spade and heading off to the Spanish Costas. Nowadays UK holiday makers want new experiences and exotic locations (without the fear of ending up in a foreign jail) which is why the Cayman Islands have greatly benefited. Being a British Overseas Territory has made the Cayman Islands a natural target for UK tourists. Cars drive on the left hand side, the shopping is tax free and the predominant language is English, albeit with an alluring Caribbean lilt.
The Increase in tourism has lead to a rise in enquiries into land in the Cayman Islands and, with a progressive government in place, land that was previously passed down from generation to generation is now being sold to developers.
