Costa del Sol to have Spain first police service for foreign visitors
|
The Interior Minister signed an agreement in Malaga last week; Costa town halls are invited to join

By the end of this month the tourist information office in the citys Plaza de la Marina will be the headquarters for the first police service designed especially for the foreign tourist, to be known as the Servicio de Atención al Turista Extranjero (SATE). The service will be extended to coastal resorts as soon as interested town halls join the scheme.
The service was explained recently by the Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, after signing the first agreement with Malaga City Hall and the Costa del Sol Tourist Board.
Any foreign visitor who becomes the victim of an offence or loses documents while in the city of Malaga will be attended to in the SATE office in their own language by officers from the Local Police, National Police or Guardia Civil. They will help them report a crime and deal with legal proceedings, even to the extent of organising a fast trial if necessary. “The idea is to provide a complete service, which even includes psychological support if necessary, as an additional value to strengthen tourism, which is our countrys strategic industry. We dont want this sort of unfortunate incident to put them off coming back to Spain, but for them to spread the news of how well they were treated in an unpleasant situation”, said the minister.
He added that there would be no skimping on resources. “We will commit to providing as many officers as necessary according to the municipalities that join the scheme. We are going to provide personalised and human attention”, added the minister.
Jorge Fernández added that the service would be extended to other Spanish provinces, stating that so far only Madrid has offered this type of initiative in Spain.
The president of the Costa del Sol Tourist Board, Elías Bendodo, said that the SATE would strengthen the Costa del Sols reputation as a safe destination. “The Costa is a very safe place, but this service will win us even more points and make us better hosts”, he stated.
